**18 and younger — driver education is required.
Before enrolling in a driver education course, the first step is to apply for this learner permit.

**19 and older — driver education is not required; however, you have two (2) options when applying for your license:
Option 1: Complete a driver education course and at least 40 hours of practice driving (10 hours after sunset); or
Option 2: Do not complete a driver education course, and you will be required to hold this learner permit for 90 days, plus complete at least 40 hours of practice driving (10 hours after sunset.)
Whether you choose option 1 or option 2 the first step is to apply for this learner permit.

Test 1: 50-question written knowledge test (you will take this test to get your learner permit.)
Test 2: Online Traffic Safety and Trends exam (you will take this exam after you have been issued your learner permit but before your license – you need your learner permit number to register for this exam.)
Test 3: Your driving skills test (you will take this test when you are ready to get your license.)

2 – WHAT IS THE PROCESS

• Fill out an online application and schedule an appointment to visit a driver license office.
• When you arrive for your learner permit appointment, have your confirmation number ready to check in, and then you will take a photo.
• After your photo, you will have a seat; when your number is called, you will present your documents to the examiner, take an eye test, and pay the non-refundable fee of $19.00.
• You will then take your 50-question written knowledge test.

3 – WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING TO YOUR APPOINTMENT

• Bring proof of identity (name and date of birth.)
• Bring your social security card.
• Bring two (2) documents providing proof of your Utah address.
• If you are age 17 and under bring a parent/legal guardian (with guardianship paperwork) to sign for financial responsibility.

The name on all of your documents must be the same name, if it is different (e.g., birth certificate, amended birth certificate, or passport), you must have legal documentation authorizing the name change. These include a certified state marriage certificate, divorce decree, updated passport, amended birth certificate, adoption paperwork, citizenship/naturalization certificate, or court documents indicating the name change sealed by the court.

Parents Signing for Financial Responsibility

At any time, the parent or legal guardian who signed for financial responsibility on the minor’s application can withdraw their signature until the minor is 18 years of age and for any reason. This action would invalidate the driver license, and the minor could reapply when they reach the age of 18 or if the parent/legal guardian signed a new application. There would be a licensing fee and a written knowledge test to reapply.

4 – COMPLETE THE APPLICATION AND SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT

5 – WHEN DO I GET MY LEARNER PERMIT

• You will receive your learner permit with a photo on the same day.
• If you lose your permit and it is still valid, you may appear at your local office and they will print you out a replacement learner permit for free.
• You may renew your learner permit by paying a $19.00 fee and completing the application/appointment process again.
• All documentation you furnished for your original learner permit is on file and is not required to obtain a renewal or replacement learner permit.

6 – DRIVE WITH YOUR LEARNER PERMIT

The learner permit entitles you to operate a regular motor vehicle only if:

• The person sitting next to you is a licensed parent, legal guardian, approved driving instructor, or the responsible adult who signed for financial responsibility.
• The learner permit must be in your immediate possession while driving.
• Other passengers can be in the vehicle.
